35th annual National Magazine Award winners announced

They were just two of many accolades handed out at yesterday’s ceremony at The Carlu in Toronto — gold, silver and honourable mentions were given out in 45 categories.
The Walrus led all magazines with six Gold and six Silver awards. This is the eighth consecutive year in which The Walrus has either had the most or tied for the most Gold awards, and the seventh time during that span in which it has won the most total awards (Gold and Silver combined). It also received 20 honourable mentions.
[node:ad]The Grid was another big winner of the night, winning four Gold and two Silver awards at its first NMAs (the weekly was launched in May 2011). The Grid’s Vanessa Wyse actually swept all three design categories — the first time that has happened since 1998 when Shift magazine won all three of Magazine Covers, Art Direction for a Single Magazine Article, and Art Direction for an Entire Issue.
Liam Casey received the award for Best New Magazine Writer for his feature in last winter’s Ryerson Review of Journalism, “Suicide Notes.” The feature, which has been much-lauded since its release, is a “rare combination of eloquent personal journalism and meticulous reporting,” said the NMAF judges.
