CBC and Radio-Canada are set to review the mandate for their ombudsmen, following last year's successful update of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

The ombudsman mandate has not been reviewed for several years; the goal is to consider the ombudsman's role in the current media landscape.

A five-person panel, led by Jodi White, president of president of the Sydney House consultancy (as well as a senior fellow of the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs and the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs in Ottawa), will conduct the review.

Panel members include: former CBC ombudsman Vince Carlin; Peter Mansbridge; Radio-Canada executive director of Internet and digital Services Genevieve Rossier; Pierre Trudel, L.R. Wilson chair in information technology and e-commerce law at the University of Montreal; and Carleton University's director of journalism and communication, associate professor Christopher Waddell.

Together, the panel will interview industry experts, past and present ombudsmen, as well as senior managers and journalists within the CBC. It will also conduct research into practices at other news organizations.

The review is scheduled for fall completion.
