Cindy Witten is joining the CBC as senior director of the Radio Network Talk department.

She starts her new role on Sept. 22 and will oversee the production of all network programming on Radio One, including shows such as The Current, Q and As It Happens.

“Cindy is the perfect person to lead Canada’s most loved radio programs into a future where the audience is as likely to connect with us on their smartphone as they are on a conventional radio,” said Chris Boyce, executive director of CBC Radio and Audio, in a press release. “She has an impressive track record of creating innovative, high quality programming that connects with audiences.”

Witten started her career producing news and current affairs for the public broadcaster. Most recently, Witten was the director general of The National Film Board of Canada’s English programming until 2012. Prior to that, she was vice-president of content at History Television and a senior executive at Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting.

“CBC was the foundation of everything that followed,” Witten said. “My years at CBC taught me how to work in a creative team, how to tell stories, and the importance and satisfaction of contributing to the social fabric of the country. It’s so great to be back.”

Witten takes over the role from Chris Straw, who is retiring.
