On Thursday evening, the Michener Awards Foundation presented one Canadian news outlet and two Canadian journalists with the 2014 Michener Award, and Michener-Deacon Fellowships for Journalism Education and Investigative Journalism, respectively.

Among six finalists (which included L’actualité, the CBC, CBC North, the Canadian Press, and Vancouver Sun), the Globe and Mail was awarded this year’s Michener Award in public service journalism for an investigative series on thalidomide and the impact the nerve-damaging drug has had on its survivors in Canada since. The November 2014 series, reported by Ingrid Peritz, spurred action on part of the federal government to vote in favour of compensating survivors of the drug through lifetime pensions.

The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education was awarded to Toronto Star reporter Robert Cribb, who will develop an investigative reporting project that will connect journalism schools across the country.

The second Michener Deacon Fellowship in Investigative Journalism was awarded to Marie-France Bélanger of Radio-Canada, who will undertake a reporting project that investigates the use of technology in Quebec classrooms.

More information about the awards gala, hosted in Rideau Hall in Ottawa, can be found on the Michener Awards Foundation’s website.
