You might think the fact that sharing on Twitter grew by 576 per cent this year would be enough to make it the fastest-growing sharing medium, but no: Sharing on Tumblr grew an astonishing 1299 per cent. To compare it to 2010: Twitter grew by 105 per cent that year, while Tumblr’s sharing statistics weren’t included.

The biggest loser was MySpace, which, at this point, shouldn’t come as much surprise. Sharing on the site dropped by nearly 60 per cent this year.

The most shared event of 2011? Osama Bin Laden’s death. Some other events that garnered a lot of sharing include Steve Jobs’ death, Occupy Wall Street, and the Japan tsunami.

AddThis is a sharing platform that is installed on 11 million sites and reaches 1.2 billion users, so it is able to serve as a fairly representative snippet of our sharing habits online.
