“As our newsroom expands and changes as we build the tablet, we are thrilled to announce superb additions to our news team, as well as two important internal promotions.”

As our newsroom expands and changes as we build the tablet, we are thrilled to announce superb additions to our news team, as well as two important internal promotions:

Julie Carl joins us as Deputy City Editor. Julie is currently associate editor for reader engagement at the Winnipeg Free Press, where she worked previously as deputy editor. She has also worked at the Fredericton Daily Gleaner as opinion page editor and the London Free Press as city editor. Projects she led have been cited for National Newspaper Awards and Michener Awards.

Christine Loureiro joins us as Entertainment Editor. Christine is currently editor-in-chief of The Kit and has also worked previously at The Star in a variety of newsroom roles including deputy Life editor.

Andrew Waugh joins us as News Editor from Postmedia Network, where he is assistant editor on the National/Foreign Desk. Andrew worked previously at the Halifax Chronicle Herald in a variety of roles, including director of news content and editorial page editor.

Jim Bray joins us as a Team Editor in Sports. Jim was sports editor of the National Post for a dozen years starting in 2002, and worked previously as a sports reporter at the Ottawa Citizen.

Anne Hewitt, who has been working until recently as a part-time page editor at The Star, has been appointed World Editor. Anne joined The Star in 1990 and has worked previously as a copy editor and assistant life editor.

Marie Sutherland will work closely with Andrew Waugh in the new role of Deputy News Editor. Marie has been with The Star since 2007, working as a Page A1 editor, senior editor and team editor on the production team. She worked previously as a Page 1 editor for the Waterloo Region Record and city editor of the Cambridge Reporter.

And finally, it is a pleasure to say that our new Director of Editorial Design, Fadi Yaacoub, starts officially on Monday, although he has already been working on assembling a crack team of tablet designers. Fadi comes to us from Radio-Canada, where among other accomplishments he revamped the look and feel of Le Téléjournal, the network’s flagship nightly newscast.

Please join us in congratulating these outstanding journalists on their new roles at the Star. And stay tuned – there will be more exciting additions and changes to our ranks in the coming weeks and months.

Sincerely,

Michael, Jane and Paul
