The following memo was sent to Star Media Group staff on Dec. 12, 2016 from Angela Mullins, Managing editor, Metro Toronto and National managing editor, Metro News.

I’m sorry to announce that Steve Rennie has decided to leave his role as managing editor of Metro Ottawa for a job with the federal government.

Steve took the helm at the Ottawa office in April 2015 and we can credit him with leading a team that has truly boosted Metro’s profile in the city.

Under his management, Metro Ottawa has been nominated for multiple awards, including the high profile Canadian Journalism Foundation’s Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism.

Steve earned the nomination after a dogged FOIP campaign turned up previously unreported details of the 2014 shooting on Parliament Hill. It serves as only one example of the newsroom’s use of public records to break stories relevant to the everyday lives of people in Ottawa and across Canada.

It’s the kind of work that has played a critical role in Metro’s readership growth and our push past the Ottawa Sun.

Steve’s expertise has been a benefit to us all and will, of course, be missed.

Please join me in wishing him the best in his next pursuit.
