Minorities 13.6% in U.S. dailies, but 3.4% in Canada
ShareThisThe percentage of minority journalists working in America’s daily newsrooms declined slightly to 13.62 percent in 2007, according to the American Society of Newspaper Editors annual newsroom census. Nearly 57,000 full-time journalists now work in daily newsrooms. The number of minority journalists increased by about 200 to nearly 7,800. Canada's newspaper industry does not gather diversity statistics, but Ryerson journalism professor John Miller conducted a 10-year tracking survey that showed minorities constituted only 3.4 percent of Canadian daily newsrooms in 2004 – five times lower than their share of the population.
