Science "sexy" south of the border: Globe
A Globe and Mail editorial Thursday notes the paradigm shift in U.S. national policy under Obama to one which ideologically and financially supports science and open inquiry. Can Canada -- which perhaps enjoyed a much more favourable comparative track record during the partisan Bush years -- survive the surge under Obama?
When it comes to funding of cutting edge research, the Globe concludes, Canada's scientific community needs its sexy back.
This is a great thread to mine for story ideas -- perhaps some enterprise/investigative (CAR and comparative funding analysis) and feature ("gee whiz" explanatory profiles) journalism would boost public understanding of what's at stake for Canada. Who's hot in your local lab? And what does Obama's sea change mean to them?
