The Massey Commission, also known as the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters and Sciences was appointed on April 8, 1949. It was led by Vincent Massey and examined Canada’s cultural sovereignty and endorsed the regulatory role of the CBC. The landmark Massey Report advocated for federal funding of a wide range of cultural activities and resulted in the founding of the National Library of Canada and Canada Council for the Arts. This was seen as the beginning of the Canadian government’s initiative to preserve and promote Canadian culture.
