Reuters is reporting that some big changes are on the way for the Toronto Star. According to three journalists at the paper – two of whom aren’t named by Reuters – the paper is offering buyouts to editorial staff, and also plans to outsource layout, other editing duties, and ad-building.

It looks like the first rumblings of the news broke on Twitter with two tweets by Star reporter Richard Brennan.

First:

"Waiting for Star publisher John Cruickshank to hold town hall meeting to map out paper's future."

Then:

"Star wants to offer VSPs (buyouts) right away."

So far, Torstar hasn’t commented.

UPDATE:

It’s true. The Globe and Mail is now reporting that senior executives at Torstar are negotiating with union reps to offer voluntary severance packages, as per company spokesperson Bob Hepburn.

Hepburn wouldn’t comment on how many jobs/positions may be on the line – or what parts of the company management might target.

Buyouts haven’t yet been offered to the staff.
