Welcome to the new J-Source. As regular readers will be aware, we spent much of 2014 working on a new website, which we’re pleased to share with you today.

Although we embarked on the project for mostly technical reasons—the old site’s infrastructure was crumbling and its content management system was quite outdated, limiting what we could do—we were fortunate to discover that we could give the site a bit of a makeover at the same time.

In many ways, this new site is still a work in progress, so you can expect to see some changes in the weeks ahead as we tinker with it. But we’re already happy with how it gives us more opportunities to share a broader range of stories with you. On our old site, only the four or five most recently posted stories stayed on the homepage; on the new site, we have more options to share breaking news and long reads on the homepage.

We’ve also tried to streamline the site’s navigation so that it’s easier to find stories on a particular topic. All the stories from the old site are still here, but the URLs will have changed, so you may need to update your bookmarks.

Our website redevelopment would not have been possible without a generous donation from The Canadian Press. We’re also indebted to Michel Kouadio, director, technology planning and innovation at the Faculty of Communication & Design at Ryerson University, who led this project and whose team will continue to provide technical support to J-Source in the future. I’d also like to thank former associate editor Tamara Baluja for her tireless efforts in seeing this project through.

I’d love to hear your feedback on the site: let me know what you think via email, or find me on Twitter.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new associate editor, Ronan O’Beirne. He did a week of training before the holidays, but this is his first real week on the job, so feel free to drop him a line to pass along a tip or just say hi.

One of his first jobs is to revamp our weekly newsletter. Now that our website has a new look, we thought our newsletter should, too. The first edition of 2015 will be mailed out next week—and on Friday morning for a change. Sign up now so you’re among the first to see it.
