RTNDA Canada, The Association of Electronic Journalists handed out its national journalism awards in Ottawa over the weekend. CTV's B.C. broadcast took home the best large market national television newscast, while CFJC TV Kamloops nabbed the small market award and A-Channel Barrie the medium market.
The best national large market radio newscast went to Newstalk 1010 CFRB Toronto, while Zed 99 in Red Deer won in the small market category and AM800 CKLW Windsor in the medium market.
Also in radio, the Peter Gzowski Award for News Information Program went to CKNW Radio Vancouver, The Christy Clark Show for "Flashpoint: Immigration" and the Adrienne Clarkson Award for Diversity went to CBC Radio Montreal for "Never Let Go."
And in television the Trina McQueen Award for News Information Program went to CTV Southwestern Ontario for Provincewide October 21, 2007 and the Adrienne Clarkson Award for Diversity went to Global Calgary for "Minority Report - Alberta's Culture Collision."

The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean presented Globe and Mail editor-in-chief Edward Greenspon and La Presse editor Philippe Cantin with the 2007 Michener Award on Friday. The two papers were honoured for their reporting on the treatment of Afghan detainees. The awards foundation noted that the coverage led to an inquiry, a new agreement which allowed Canadian investigators access to the detainees and Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor's being moved out of the position amidst criticism of his handling of the issue. Other news organizations recognized with citations of merit include the CBC, Le Devoir, the London Free Press, The Province and the Toronto Star.

Charles Oberdorf, a veteran in the Canadian magazine world, drew heavy applause at this year's annual National Magazine Awards gala when he took issue with the state of freelance pay rates in the industry. Oberdorf won the evening's award for outstanding achievement. He expressed his passion for the magazine community in this country and made a point of using the podium to bring up the issue of freelance rates.

Spacing, Profit and enRoute took home the top prizes at last night's Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME) awards night in Toronto. Each was honoured with the magazine of the year award at this year's editor's choice awards in the categories of large-, medium-, and small-circulation, respectively. Meanwhile, DesignEdge won in the trade magazines category. In addition, Spacing editor Dale Duncan was chosen as editor of the year. The best front-of-book award went to Explore and Maisonneuve picked up the Jim Cormier Award for best display writing.

The World Association of Newspapers launched its annual conference by giving the Golden Pen of Freedom award to Chinese journalist Li Changqing, the Canadian Press reports. Li, who recently served two years in prison for reporting on an outbreak of dengue fever, was unable to travel to Goteborg, Sweden, to accept the award because he could not get a passport.

ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation will recognize a Canadian journalist with the Peter Gzowski Literacy Award of Merit (PGLAM) on September 17, 2008. Each year the non-profit organization selects a recipient from the submissions of print and broadcast journalists who have examined the complex issue of low literacy and its impact on Canadian society. Mary Baxter, Robert Irwin and Don Stoneman of Better Farming magazine won the Canadian Association of Journalists award for investigative journalism in the magazine category. The threesome, honoured at the CAJ's conference in Edmonton on May 24th, are also J-Source's contributing editors for agricultural journalism.
