Three journalists from the Calgary Herald watched their cars get swept away by floodwaters while reporting on the scene. The entire CBC Calgary newsroom was evacuated and found a temporary home elsewhere so that broadcasts could continue. Those are just a couple of examples of what news organizations and their journalists went through to cover the worst flood in Alberta’s history.

New research by the University of British Columbia and Memorial University on how Canada’s media reports on climate change suggests that our national newspapers – The Globe & Mail and National Post – are failing to provide their readers with a complete picture of global warming and climate change issues in Canada. Tindall, a participant in former U.S. vice president and Nobel laureate Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, spoke with ArtsWIRE writer April van Ert prior to presenting the research at Congress, Canada’s national humanities and social sciences conference, which took place in Victoria from June 1 to June 8.

As the final round of the Joint Review Panel hearings into Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline project began this week, one local journalist has problems with the coverage of the issue. Robin Rowland argues that many of the reporters are not based in northern B.C. and report the news through a business and political lens rather than balancing it with environmental reporting. Simply "balancing" Enbridge's stance on the project against the views of activists and First Nations members does not adequately explain the Northern Gateway debate.

Statistics Canada creates and releases statistics that can help people to a better understanding of Canada and its population, resources, economy and culture. The site has information about the census, and material organized in summary tables, maps, surveys and charts. The Daily is a section of the website which presents information about new releases and products, and is released every day at 8.30 a.m. There is also an "understanding statistics" section which can be helpful in understanding the material and information available on the site.
