For journalists, social networks provide not only data for investigative reporting, but also new ways of finding experts, tracking trends, and searching the web (with a little help from your friends). This month's column provides links to resources on Social Network Analysis including tutorials, software tools, social networking sites, and search engines that leverage social referrals.
In a related article, Julie Ryland asks Matthew Ingram, technology writer of The Globe and Mail, for his views about online social networks as a journalistic tool.

Mathew Ingram has a Facebook account. He's not a student looking for someone to share his drunken stories with, or to hook up with his long-lost love from spring break. He's a journalist who has discovered that social networks are a gigantic resource for tracking down people and creating stories.

This site is developed and designed for traders, and its purpose is to provide them with free training in understanding today's markets. However, TrainingEducation is also a good resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the influence of currency in the trading business, about markets and money. The site has a "daily currency analysis"; articles that discuss the major changes in the currencies and exchange rates, and the impact these changes might have on the world economy.

The Bank of Canada 10-year Currency Converter enables you to see the exchange rate for any currency for a selected time period (a maximum of 10 years ago). The site converts any amount of any currency, and you can choose if you want to use the currency rate from the last business day, a certain number of past business days or from a certain start date to an end date. It gives you the option of using the nominal rate or the cash rate (the total amount you would pay if you went to a bank to convert the money, as most banks add 4% for this service).
