The Supreme Court of Canada has sent the case of a Globe and Mail reporter who refused to identify an anonymous source used in stories about the Quebec sponsorship scandal back to Quebec Superior Court with guidelines on how to resolve it. The Supreme Court said journalists should be able to protect confidential sources if they can show it is in the public interest, and such cases must be resolved on a case-by-case basis.

Strict controls on what federal researchers can reveal about their work is a disservice to science and the public, and the Canadian government's information policies are muzzling government scientists in their dealings with the media, writes Kathryn O'Hara, president of the Canadian Science Writers' Association and a Carleton University journalism professor, in an opinion piece published online by Nature.

Two leading Canadian free expression organizations have confirmed reports that Canadian Iranian blogger Hossein Derakhshan may face the death sentence. Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) and PEN Canada learned from Derakhshan’s family that the Iranian prosecutor in his case has called for the death penalty.
