Canwest has linked 13 of its community newspapers in B.C. in to a Van Net website giving access to each of the papers. Each community paper has its own site. Some are using video and they are interactive. The community can send in information about coming events and such things as sports scores.

CanWest MediaWorks Publications Inc. is increasing its presence in the southern Ontario market by acquiring three publication groups in Windsor-Essex County for an undisclosed price, the company announced in November.

The new name was approved by the board of directors of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association in early 2007. The name Canadian Media Circulation Audit is a reflection of the growth and enhancements of the program and better positions it as a credible circulation audit-ing service with media, government, advertisers and agencies.

In an effort to protect the ecosystems at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, the Graduate Program in Interactive Environmental Journalism at the Reynolds School of Journalism has created an innovative website to assist citizens, policymakers, scientists and anyone interested in protecting the environment within the community. It is an excellent example of public journalism using the web and it has received recognition from the J-Lab Knight-Batten Awards for Innovation.

Community Media Canada (CMC) is a great resource for locating the members of the Canadian community newspaper industry with over 850 newspapers. The publications represent every single province and territory, serving communities ranging from remote areas in the territories to downtown urban centres in Canada's largest cities.

Knox and Waldo VillageSoup, locally dubbed TheSoup, is an experiment bringing immediate information and interactions to weekly newspaper markets. It exemplifies a new business model going beyond the Community News business to the Community Hosting business. Knox and Waldo VillageSoup and its affiliated weekly newspapers are charter members of VillageSoup Common, a for-profit member organization providing brand and brand-marketing, deployment, hosting, support, education and enhancement services to independent local media companies serving traditional weekly newspaper markets.

The Sudbury Star will be revamping its website to follow the "citizen media" format. According to the newspaper publisher, Osprey Media used a group of "young, tech-savvy minds" to decide on the best course of action to update the website, and user-created content was the top choice.

While citizen journalism sites like NowPublic are gaining popularity and media attention, there are some hyper-local examples of the same kind of collaborative journalism. Northumberland View is a new community news and information portal for Northumberland County, Ontario, about one hour east of Toronto. Serving a mainly rural area, the website contains stories that are sent in from municipalities, local agencies, school boards, local health unit and include provincial and federal press releases. Eventually, it hopes to solicit news from citizens interested in writing about local events. These are put into sections including news, entertainment, homeview, lifeview and sport.
