Found at ijnet.org, the home of the International Journalists' Network, are these two management guides written by Steve Buttry, director of tailored programs at the American Press Institute. Kindling the Flame for Newsroom Executives and Kindling the Flame: How to motivate cranky, creative journalists are clearly written with examples and tools for handling management problems.

Part of a series of handbooks produced by the Freedom Forum, Best Practices: The Art of Leadership in News Organizations, focuses on the qualities, duties and responsibilities of good management. Twenty news-business leaders, including Ben Bradlee, Jay Harris and Arthur Sulzberger Jr., were interviewed and the document is a compilation of their responses. Norman Pearlstine, editor-in-chief of Time Inc. is quoted in the introduction: "I've made every mistake in the book -- and then some.But I've learned from the experiences." Annual provincial budget reporting doesn't generally inspire unconventional coverage styles, but Drew Edwards at the Guelph Mercury decided to try something a little different this year and it worked. Edwards attended the American Press Institute's City and Metro Editors seminar and put some of the new ideas into practice in the newsroom when the budget came down. Edwards continues to consider new ideas and keep the newsroom fresh.
