David Staples has worked for the Edmonton Journal since 1985, covering an eclectic mix of crime, politics, sports and pop culture. He is the winner of two National Newspaper Awards and this year won an NNA Certificate of Merit in the Explanatory Journalism category for a story on the complex social history of infanticide. Here, he explains how he came to write “Revisiting Canada’s infanticide law” after a jury found a young mother, Katrina Effert, guilty of killing her newborn.

Investigative reporter Andrew Mitrovica is a contributing editor at The Walrus magazine and teaches journalism at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont.  In May 2007, he won the Canadian Association of Journalists award for investigative journalism in the magazine category.  Here, he explains how he came to write “Hear No Evil, Write No Lies” and discusses the repercussions that followed the publication of his award-winning article.

Since the breakup of the former Yugoslavia in the early 90s, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has provided more than $530 million in aid to the Balkans, resulting in over 800 projects. Kinia Adamczyk, a Concordia University journalism student, who recently won a Millennium Grant, is spending three months in the area. Here are some of her observations that she wrote for J-Source and for Concordia’s student newspaper The Link.

For his story "Big Oil on Trial," Jeremy Klaszus earned a National Magazine Award for best new writer and was a finalist for the Canadian Journalism Association’s award for investigative journalism in the magazine category. The story, published in Alberta Views magazine, also won a Western Magazine Award. All the accolades are especially gratifying since Klaszus is a young journalist. Here, he explains how he came to write his award-winning piece.

Shelley Page of the Ottawa Citizen recently won the CAJ award for investigative journalism in the Open Newspaper/Wire Service category.  Page, who has also won two National Newspaper Awards in the past for feature writing and political reporting, currently writes a Sunday column for the Citizen.  Here, in this First Person account, she details how she came to write her CAJ award-winning series “Falling Heroes.”

In his award-winning piece "One Costly Crash"" former city editor for the Kingston Whig-Standard, Steve Ladurantaye, gives a detailed account of the costs of surviving a car crash.  His personal story recently won a National Newspaper Award in the Explanatory Category. Here, Ladurantaye, who now works for the Globe and Mail as a copy editor for Report on Business, tells how he came to write the story.
