The Walrus gained the most nominations in this year's National Magazine Awards. With 37 nominations in total, The Walrus led the pack with Toronto Life in second place with 29 nominations, followed by Maclean's with a total of 18. The three finalists for magazine of the year are Maisonneuve, L'actualite and Toronto Life. This is the 31st annual National Magazine Awards and the winners will be announced at a gala on June 6 in Toronto.

Staff at the New York Times is bracing for as many as 30 layoffs in the next 10 days, reports the New York Post. NYT Executive Editor William Keller had said originally that he was looking to cut 100 people from the Times staff in response to the dismal newspaper advertising environment. With just 70 people stepping forward for buyouts, it is very likely that 30 newsroom staffers will be forced out in coming days, in the company's first-ever mass firing of journalists in its 156-year history.

Montreal police, armed with a search warrant, have seized riot reports that aired on Radio-Canada after a Canadiens game Monday night, CBC reports. The police also asked for raw footage of the riot, but the public broadcaster is contesting that request. Tapes were also seized at TVA, a private network.

Sean Avery, the feisty New York Rangers player who just helped his team advance in the NHL playoffs, will be an unpaid intern at Vogue magazine this summer, ABC News reports. Avery's duties will include answering phones and getting samples, a Vogue spokesman said.

A joint entry by The Globe and Mail and the CBC is among six finalists for the 2007 Michener Award for meritorious public journalism. The other finalists are Le Devoir, The London Free Press, The Province, The Toronto Star and entries from the Globe and La Presse that were combined by the judges.

Four months after Rupert Murdoch took over the Wall Street Journal, its top editor is expected to step down, the New York Times reports. Marcus Brauchli has been in the job less than a year. Sources differed on whether he was being forced out or was resigning in frustration over some imposed changes.

The Israeli army will investigate how a cameraman for the Reuters news agency died in Gaza, the Associated Press reports. Fadel Shana was filming an Israeli tank when he was hit by a shell. Human Rights Watch said it had found evidence the tank crew fired recklessly or deliberately.

Stephen J.A. Ward, Director of the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of British Columbia and the Ethics Editor of J-Source, is leaving for the United States. In August 2008, Ward will take up an appointment as the first James E. Burgess Chair and Professor in Journalism
Ethics, and director of a new Center for Journalism Ethics, at the the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The National, the newspaper helmed by ex-Daily Telegraph editor Martin Newland based in Abu Dhabi, hit newsstands on April 17. The paper boasts a staff of 200 reporters and editors, drawn from acclaimed newspapers around the world, and aims to "to reflect society, help that society evolve and, perhaps most importantly, promote the bedrock traditions and virtues that must be preserved even in times of change," according to Newland. It also hopes to establish Abu Dhabi as a global economic centre.

Torstar Corp. announced yesterday that it is reducing its workforce by 160 positions in a bid to restructure its newspaper division. The company said about 122 people are taking voluntary buy-out packages and other employees, some in online production, will be laid off.
The move is expected to save Torstar about $12 million per year.
