With many students beginning their summer internships this week, J-Source takes a  look at their job prospects. An internship is often the golden ticket to scoring a job in journalism. But with media outlets across the country laying off staff, are there still jobs to be had for interns? And will the unions allow the relatively cheaper labour to replace staffers? Union chair Stuart Laidlaw told J-Source Tuesday that management rejected the proposal and will continue on the Star’s original plan to outsource page editing to Pagesmasters. The newspaper will downsize with 26 page editors taking buyouts or facing layoffs.

As traditional newsrooms continue to shrink, the question of how to do in-depth reporting – and also make money – in this country has never been more daunting. And now, Canada’s only non-profit investigative centre is closing. While its executive director says the failure of the Canadian Centre for Investigative Reporting shows that Canada is not ready for a non-profit model of investigative journalism, others say CCIR failed to develop the the brand name recognition to succeed. Ryerson student Edward Tubb reports.
