The new radio morning show has been in the works for almost five years, ever since CBC undertook a country-wide study looking at underserved markets. But the station will be up against some challenges when it launches April 29, including the retirement of one of its veteran hosts Costa Maragos and a market, that some say, is already saturated.

CBC filed its application for the Waterloo Region service with the CRTC in June 2012, but it did not recieve permission to broadcast. The show had launched just over a month ago and was the first new station the CBC had opened in Ontario in the last 40 years.

That’s not to say that other newsrooms don’t have investigative teams that employ data analysts or do regular data-led investigations, but he hasn’t heard of any other newsroom that had a dedicated team of data journalists working full-time on such investigations.
