“Bearing Witness: Journalism, Trust and Social Media” by Andy Carvin, Asper Visiting Professor, Journalist and Author

October 24, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

For the last two decades, American journalist Andy Carvin has pioneered the use of social media to report geopolitical upheaval, from the September 11 attacks to the Arab Spring. Is social media making the world a better place, or worse? Can journalism restore public trust in itself? And in an increasingly darkening world order, can individual journalists help steer society – and themselves – in a hopeful direction? In this provocative and deeply personal lecture, Andy will explore how the Internet has created new opportunities for public understanding while also sowing the seeds of mistrust and confusion. When all is said and done, what will it take for trust – in journalism, in society, and in ourselves – to come out on top?
