Around the world: U.S. midterm election leads Canadian world headlines
The U.S. midterm elections took up significant space under Canadian world headlines Tuesday.

The U.S. midterm elections landed prominent coverage in many Canadian news outlets Tuesday.
The CBC ran a piece on the election on top of its online world section under the headline ‘‘Election day in America: 7 things to watch in midterms.’’ The story by Meagan Fitzpatrick outlined some of the most important issues in today’s election. The piece ran with a picture of U.S. President Barack Obama in a voting booth.
The Globe and Mail featured its election coverage on its front page below the fold. The story under the headline ‘‘Control of Senate at stake and with it, Obama’s legacy’’ had a throw to the inside. The Washington-placelined story was reported by the Globe’s Paul Koring.
The Toronto Star ran an Associated Press story in its world section of Tuesday’s paper. Steven R. Hurst’s report featured a four-column photo of President Obama together with Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. The story ran under the headline ‘‘Republicans on verge of majority.’’
CTV News also ran an election story on top of its online world section, this one from Ukraine. The broadcaster’s coverage focused on the disputed election in the region of Donetsk, which has declared itself sovereign from the rest of the country. The AP story reported that the pro-Russian rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko has been sworn in as president of the region.
The National Post ran a four-column picture above the fold under the headline ‘‘The New York City skyline is whole again’’ with a throw to the inside. The AP story featured the new World Trade Center, which is now open, 13 years after the 9/11 attacks.
Global News topped its world section online with an AP story covering the appeal by prosecutors in the case of South African athlete Oscar Pistorius. The ‘‘Blade Runner’’ was convicted for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in October and sentenced to five years in prison.
