“A flood of job cuts threatens to hobble high-quality journalism in this country,” says a press release from an association representing some Canadian journalists.

“The retrenchment is so profound that the Canadian Association of Journalists fears journalism in Canada is reaching a tipping point where the decline in the quality of news content will lead to an industry death spiral of less content, smaller audiences, and yet more cuts.

“In the last three months alone, Canadian media owners have slashed more than 1,200 full-time employees,” noted the association, which says it has 1,500 members.
