J-Source.ca is the number one Canadian journalism news website in the country.  To ensure we keep providing news, opinion and resources about our profession and industry, we are looking to hire an energetic, thoughtful, self-motivated, collaborative and enthusiastic journalist to join our team as Associate Editor. 

The Associate Editor is directly responsible for managing all content on J-Source, acting as both a reporter and editor as necessary.  You will be linking, writing and posting news, features and commentary about what is happening in Canadian journalism; resources to help reporters, writers and editors; professional practices, ethics and media law; how journalism is taught and studied; and, academic research on the profession and the industry.

The site is targeted primarily to journalists, our audience includes researchers, professors, students and the public. J-Source.ca and its French counterpart ProjetJ.ca are projects of The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) in collaboration with journalism schools and organizations across Canada.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years experience working as a journalist in a news gathering environment (online and multimedia experience preferred)
  • Visit J-Source regularly and can demonstrate an interest in journalistic issues and the Canadian journalism industry
  • Possess excellent research, reporting, writing, proofreading and editing skills in English to ensure timely delivery of accurate content both as a reporter and editor
  • Know how to produce original stories whether that’s working as a reporter or collaborating with volunteer editors and writers
  • Know your way around the Web, having tweeted, friended, blogged, managed content and otherwise communicated with various online networks

 

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief and the Executive Director, in support of the masthead team members, the Associate Editor will perform the following tasks:

As a Reporter:

  • Create relevant, original content on a daily basis
  • Seek out relevant news, opinion, analysis, resources and other content of interest to Canadian journalists; rewrite for J-Source audience and post to site
  • Conduct reporting for original feature ideas
  • Copyedit all content ensuring consistency, accuracy, and fairness (including approaching people named to invite comment)
  • Moderate comments from readers throughout the day
  • Keep on top of Canadian journalism-related events for Events Calendar 
  • Attend and report on events when relevant, either through traditional reporting or live blogging
  • Attend and report on CJF’s monthly J-Talk events

 

As an Editor:

  • Seek opportunities for original content, assign it (where required) on section editors' behalf, and work with creators and editors to shape and post the content
  • Develop editorial line-up for weekly e-newsletters; including four J-Source-exclusive features per week; write all display copy for editor’s approval
  • Prepare and send out newsletter to subscribers each week
  • Assign writing assignments and J-Source work tasks to Students’ Lounge editor; manage workload and oversee work done
  • Assign reporters to attend journalism-related events
  • Organize ideas for J-Source special projects 
  • Communicate with editors regularly to ensure  they’re producing  content and provide support
  • Remain available to editors by phone and email during normal business hours
  • Seek and nurture relationships with independent journalists, news organizations and journalism sites
  • In collaboration with CJF Program Manager, suggest ways to grow and improve the site in terms of content, interactivity and navigation
  • Encourage community engagement through social networks
  • Manage J-Source social media presence
  • In collaboration with Editor-in-Chief, manage paid contributors
