The following is a memo obtained by J-Source stating that Cathrin Bradbury will join Metro English Canada as its vice-president and editor-in-chief on Oct. 14.

To All Staff

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Cathrin Bradbury as Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of Metro English Canada, effective October 14, 2014.

Metro is Canada’s most-read national daily newspaper brand, available in print, online and mobile in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. In addition, Metro is also available online and on mobile devices in London, Hamilton, Kitchener, Regina, Saskatoon, Victoria and Windsor. Each week, Metro reaches one in four Canadians, providing a unique blend of news and information appealing to metropolitan readers in cities from coast to coast.

Cathrin brings a wealth of journalistic and newsroom leadership experience to this role. She joined Star Media Group in 2011 to launch Star Content Studios, a branded content organization.   As Executive Director of Content Development, and founding director of Star Content Studios, Cathrin has grown the business into a leading Canadian content organization, providing uniquely authentic storytelling capabilities to marketers and other groups in Canada and globally.

Before joining Star Media Group, Cathrin held leadership positions at Rogers Publishing, where she developed new national business and revenue streams for such titles as Maclean’s, Canadian Business, Hello! and Chatelaine.  Prior to that, Cathrin held a series of newsroom leadership positions at the Globe and Mail, including Managing Editor of News and Features.  She has launched and run a series of national magazines, and won many awards for her work in journalism.

In the interim, Cathrin will continue to oversee Star Content Studios.

Cathrin replaces Charlotte Empey, whose decision to leave Metro was the subject of a separate announcement.

Please join me in congratulating Cathrin on this new appointment.

This memo addresses Charlotte Empey's departure from Metro Englsh Canada.

To All Staff

It is with considerable regret that I am today announcing Charlotte Empey’s decision to leave her role as Editor-in-Chief of Metro English Canada.

Charlotte approached us a short while ago to express her interest in embarking on a new career. With considerable reluctance, we agreed to a plan in which she will remain in her role until the appointment of a new Editor-in-Chief becomes effective later this fall.

Charlotte joined Metro in 2010 and since then has transformed the editorial quality and presence of the brand, as well as playing a key role in Metro’s expansion from coast to coast in Canada.   Under Charlotte’s leadership, Metro has become Canada’s most-read national daily newspaper. She also spearheaded the creation of Metro’s unique approach to news and story-telling, which fuelled its growth into a national chain of newspapers and websites.

Before joining Metro, Charlotte had an extensive and successful career in Canadian media. From 2005 to 2010, she was Associate Dean of the School of Creative Arts at Humber College. Previous to that, Charlotte held numerous positions in the Canadian magazine industry, including Editor and Group Publisher of Homemakers and Group Publisher of Canadian Living. She was also editor of Images and Health Watch and founding editor of Modern Woman.

In expressing her decision to step down as Editor-in-Chief, Charlotte indicated the time was right for a transition to a new leader for Metro’s editorial team. We accepted her decision with reluctance.

Please join me in thanking Charlotte for her many contributions to Metro. Her drive and passion for excellence will be truly missed.
