The following memo was sent by Edmonton Journal managing editor Stephanie Coombs to staff on Jan. 19 after she was let go by Postmedia.

Hi everyone,

By now you’ve heard the news today. It was a bit of a surprise to me, and I certainly understand it will come as a shock to many of you.

I don’t know what the company’s plan is for the Journal and for all of you, but I did make clear that I felt it was imperative that there was proper leadership moving forward. Margo did the same. I do hope that happens.

The past 4 1/2 years working at the Journal and with you have been a great honour and a privilege. I’ve always been so proud to call you my colleagues and to tell this city’s stories with you. I think we’ve done some incredible stuff, while tackling so many challenges, and so I leave knowing it’s been a great run.

It’s a tough time for journalism but please remember that no matter what financial or organizational problems come your way, you are doing such important, honourable work. Don’t stop that.

Let’s do drinks soon — Margo and I will put our heads together about that.

Talk soon,
Stephanie
