Submissions are open for the third annual Canadian Hillman Prize honouring excellence in journalism in service of the common good as practiced in the 2012 calendar year.

From the Sidney Hillman Foundation website:

The 2013 prize will be given to a reported piece or series produced, published, broadcast or exhibited in 2012. Eligible entries include reporting in newspapers, magazines, and online, as well as film and broadcast journalism (television and radio), photojournalism, and multi‐media. The contest is open to journalists and subjects globally, although the content must have been published in Canada.

Submissions should consist of a cover letter and four copies of the material being nominated. Photojournalism entries should provide tear sheets, though scanned images on a disc can be supplemental, the Foundation says.

The submission deadline is Jan. 9 2013, and the award will be presented in early March.

CBC's the fifth estate team won last year's prize for their work on "Scout's Honour" and The Hamilton Spectator's Steve Buist took home the inaugural prize in 2011 for his "Code Red" investigative work.
