The first edition of the Evening Star was published in Toronto on Nov. 3, 1892, with the goal of providing serious, in-depth journalism. A self-styled “Paper for the People,” it was assembled under the guidance of Horatio Hocken, a foreman and future Toronto mayor. The four-page paper eventually turned into the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest daily newspaper, with the largest readership in the country.
