Fake vs. Fact (An NCM workshop series)

New Canadian Media is proud to present a new series of workshops for immigrant journalists on “fake news” in the run-up to the October federal election.

This first-of-its-kind workshop series will kick off on August 17 at Centennial College’s Story Arts Centre in Toronto. Additional workshops will be offered in Calgary and Vancouver.

These workshops will be led by industry experts to help you:

1. Fact-check claims and analyze the credibility of online news sources

2. Pitch story ideas to news organizations

3. Use social media as an effective source of gathering and reporting news in your community

4. Emphasize your role as a storyteller through a review of relevant ethical codes and standards that apply to journalists in Canada.

Leading our line up of instructors are Louis Baudoin-Laarman, a member of the International Fact-Checking Network, and Prof. Ahmed Al-Rawi, an Iraq-born expert on fake news who teaches at B.C.’s Simon Fraser University.

The registration fee for this workshop is $100 and includes a one-year complimentary membership with the NCM Collective. This also entitles you to membership privileges with the Canadian Association of Journalists.

All participants for the ‘Fake vs. Fact’ workshops are strongly encouraged to submit a story pitch (max 200 words) that addresses an issue you believe to be pertinent to your immigrant/ethnic community in the lead up to the 2019 federal election.

Participants whose pitches are selected for publication by New Canadian Media will be reimbursed the full cost of the workshop and will receive tailored one-on-one guidance by one of the presenters at our workshops.

These workshops are funded through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Digital Citizen Initiative, and offered in partnership with the National NewsMedia Council. Our Toronto workshop is being co-hosted by Centennial College.
