The Institute for Investigative Journalism seeks a skilled investigative producer and editor to work with local, provincial and national teams of reporters and researchers on collaborative investigations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in investigations and data journalism, along with an unwavering dedication to accuracy.

The editor and producer will help to coordinate the consortium’s production process, from an idea’s approval by the editorial board through to publication day and beyond. Building on the IIJ’s track record of solving difficult research problems, the candidate will maintain a creative, can-do approach to uncovering hidden information. The successful candidate will regard the obstacles that the consortium encounters in any area, whether editorial or operational, as interesting challenges that may be solved with the help of new technologies, unusual collaborative partnerships, or other previously untried methods.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working across institutional boundaries, in all mediums and preparing content for all audiences. The IIJ seeks an editor and producer who will take pride in leading teams of student journalists and helping them to work with seasoned professionals as they produce timely content on budget and according to the highest standards.

The editor and producer will be flexible in terms of their understanding of how a newsroom works. The position is best suited to a lifelong learner who is excited by the challenge of building a sustainable not- for-profit enterprise devoted to public service journalism and journalism education.

This is a full-time position, preferably at the IIJ office in Montreal, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. It is a one-year contract at a competitive salary, with renewal dependent upon funding. Start date is early February.

Selected duties:

● Assist with planning and managing IIJ operations, assigning tasks as needed
● Build and nurture talent among teams of staff and consortium members
● Coordinate editorial meetings
● Manage and execute detailed production schedules
● Oversee verification processes and edit copy when necessary
● Assist in evaluating copy for compliance with policies, style and tone
● Solve problems as they arise
● Maximize efficiency by creating workflows, setting up tools and templates


● Minimum 5 years newsroom experience
● Previous experience in investigations and collaborations
● Previous experience reporting in underserved communities
● Undergraduate degree in journalism or similar relevant field
● Exceptional ability in reporting, writing, editing and producing
● In-depth knowledge of Excel and other programs
● Excellent communication and leadership skills
● Fluency in both English and French preferred
