Rick Perry doesn’t get the Globe’s joke

Texas governor, and Republican presidential hopeful, doesn’t get The Globe and Mail’s satire. Or, at least, it would seem that way after he recently took a jab at the Occupy movement by referencing a quote from a satirical Globe piece about Occupy Toronto. Texas governor, and Republican presidential hopeful, doesn’t get The Globe and Mail’s satire. Or, at least, it would seem that way after he recently took a jab at the Occupy movement by referencing a quote from a satirical Globe piece about Occupy Toronto, which he says was sent to him by his son.

Here’s what Perry said:

I don’t know if it can be proved up or not. The young man’s name was Jeremy and he was 38 years old. But he said, ‘We got here at 9 o’clock, and those people, this was in Toronto, I think Bay Street is their comparable [Wall Street], he said those bankers that we came to insult, they’d already been at work for two hours when we got here at 9 o’clock, and when we get ready to leave, you know, they’re still in there working. I guess greed just makes you work hard.

Of course, it didn’t take long for the quote to take off. Bloggers around the U.S. poked fun at Jeremy.

Now, not so funny.

Here’s what the essayist, Mark Schatzker, wrote in his clearly-labeled satire piece “Occupy Toronto: The one-week anniversary party”

It’s weird protesting on Bay Street. You get there at 9 a.m. and the rich bankers who you want to hurl insults at and change their worldview have been at work for two hours already. And then when it's time to go, they're still there. I guess that's why they call them the one per cent. I mean, who wants to work those kinds of hours? That's the power of greed. – Jeremy, 38

Other made-up quotes in the piece included:

“I was sitting on a park bench drinking a coffee and a reporter came up to me and asked me about Occupy and I was like, ‘What's that? I'm just sitting here drinking a coffee. Who are these people?’ It wasn't for another 15 minutes that I realized I was part of something bigger than myself, but by that point it was over.” – Tim, 44
