tonight newspaper has scored big with a distribution deal that allows the free biweekly paper inside the TTC subway stations as of this week.

Publisher and co-founder John Cameron said tonight had been chasing after this deal since its inception four years ago. Although the newspaper is handed out by newsies outside the stations, Cameron says actually having the newspaper on Gateway Newstands inside the stations will boost readership.

“A lot of people, especially in the winter, just use the PATH or just go down straight from their building downtown and enter the subway,” he said.

A third of  tonight’s readers are TTC commuters, Cameron said, making this a lucrative deal.  While he won’t reveal the specifics of the deal, “let me say a deal like this doesn’t come cheap.”

Since Metro has an exclusive deal with the TTC making it the only free daily sold inside the stations, Cameron said tonighttonight reduced its publications to twice a week.  According to Newspaper Canada’s 2012 circulation stats, tonight is the third largest free daily in the city.
