Memo: Fiona Conway leaving CBC News after five years
Conway joined CBC from ABC News in 2012.
The following memo was sent to CBC staff on Feb. 24, 2017, from Jennifer McGuire, General Manager and Editor in Chief.
Join me in saying goodbye to Fiona Conway after 5 years at CBC. Fiona joined us from ABC News in 2012 as Executive Director of Programming for CBC News. Before that she had successful stints at both CTV and Global here in Canada. Fiona is leaving us to pursue a personal passion she has always wanted to explore. Watch for great things from her on that front.
Over the past five years, Fiona has shepherded the flagship television and radio news shows for the entire CBC News service. Under her leadership, CBC News Network achieved its highest share ever and our coverage of the 2015 Canadian election broke innovative new ground. The National, the fifth estate, World Report, World at Six/This Hour/This Weekend and Marketplace continue to be cornerstones of a news service Canadians count on. The Investigators and On the Money, the latest two programs developed by Fiona and her team, recently joined that list. CBC News’ network shows and hosts alone this year have garnered 22 Canadian Screen Award nominations under her leadership. And that’s just the CSA’s.
Fiona’s timing coincides with the redevelopment of The National. It is the right time to hand over the reins to a new leader who can build on Fiona’s success. We will initiate a search immediately. In the short term, CBC News programs and CBC News Network will report through Paul Hambleton in to me directly.
Join me in wishing Fiona well. Her last day will be February 3rd.
