Research on working experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ journalists seeking volunteers
The research, led by Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty of Liberal Arts associate professor Bruce Gillespie, aims to discover how some of the concerns highlighted in other studies about 2SLGBTQ+ journalists and media workers resonate with those working in Canada. These elements may include the such as the complexity of navigating their identity at work and in the field; how they perceive their opportunities for new jobs and career advancement; if they have experienced harassment in the newsroom, in the field, and/or online; if they feel they’ve been treated as activists rather than impartial professionals at work; and the lack of meaningful supports and mentorship at work and in the industry at large.
2SLGBTQ+ journalists or those who worked in journalism sometime during the past five years and may have recently retired or moved into a different field is eligible. This includes people in a variety of roles—including but not limited to writers, reporters, editors, producers, on-air hosts, photographers, videographers, and podcasters—at all career stages.
If you decide to volunteer for this study, your participation will consist of filling out a short online questionnaire. Then, all respondents will be invited to take part in a Zoom or telephone interview to discuss your experiences. In appreciation of your time, you will be entered into a draw to receive a $25 gift certificate.
Participation in this study is voluntary and the final decision about participation is yours. This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through the Wilfrid Laurier University Research Ethics Board (#8518).
