The Canadian Journalism Foundation has named Le Journal de Montréal’s Michel Auger as this year’s recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award.
A longtime crime reporter with the Montreal-based paper, Auger’s coverage of motorcycle gang rivalries in Quebec led to new police enforcement changes in that province and was recognized with a number of press awards from the Canadian Association of Journalists, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression and the National Newspaper Association. In 2000, an attempt was made on his life in retaliation for his work, which he later wrote about in The Biker Who Shot Me.
The award, which will be presented to Auger at the June 3 Canadian Journalism Foundation Awards gala in Toronto, was selected by a panel of jury members that included Valerie Pringle, Chantal Hébert, Michael Cormier, Kirk LaPointe, Sarah Jennings, Jane Taber and Anthony Wilson-Smith.
