Canada’s top media tweeters in 2017
While 2017 was, in many respects, a dumpster fire of a year, for journalists it was one not lacking on things to report on. Donald Trump, massive corporate mergers, mass protests and natural disaster after natural disaster made it an especially busy year.
With that in mind, inspired by our friends at Poynter, J-Source decided to ask Twitter Canada which Canadian media organizations and journalists were among the top mentioned Twitter handles in 2017.
To no one’s surprise, the most mentioned Canadian journalist was the Toronto Star’s Washington correspondent Daniel Dale. From Jan. 1 to Nov. 30 2017, he created a massive Twitter audience for his dogged fact checks on President Trump’s many falsehoods — 414 of them in just the first six months of office — and his forthright reporting on the president that held nothing back.
Twitter didn’t release data about what other Canadian journalists made it on top, but a spokesperson did provide a top ten list of the most mentioned Canadian media outlets.
Number one? @CBCNews. CBC actually took up three of the top ten spots – @CBCAlerts was number four, and the main @CBC handle was number ten.
In second was @globeandmail, followed by @TorontoStar. In at number five was @TheRebelTV, the handle for Ezra Levant’s controversial website geared towards the right wing.
