Amy Goodman, founder and host of the U.S. syndicated radio and television program “Democracy Now!”
was named as a recipient of the  Right Livelihood Award founded by
Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull to recognize work he
felt was being ignored by the Nobel Prizes.

The Associated Press, in a story from Sweden,
reported  Goodman was chosen for “truly independent political
journalism that brings to millions of people the alternative voices
that are often excluded by mainstream media,” adding her program
provides independent reports from around the world about the effects of
U.S. foreign policy.

AP noted that Goodman, born in 1957, “was
also one of about 800 demonstrators and journalists arrested during
protests at the Republican National Convention in mid-September.”
