Earlier this year, Victoria Times Colonist reporter Katie DeRosa was named the inaugural Travers Fellowship recipient. She is currently in Australia, working on her fellowship-funded project, which is an investigation into the impact of Canada’s proposed tougher human smuggling laws on refugee claimants.

The James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship was established in honour of the fellowship's namesake's passion for foreign reporting after he passed away suddenly in March 2011.
On Oct 16 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Travers Debates raised about $50,000 for the Fellowship. This guarantees that the Fellowship can be awarded annually for the next 16 years. The goal is still to endow it in perpetuity.
CPAC intends to broadcast the Debates at 9 pm EDT on Friday, Oct 19.
Featured are journalists Chantal Hebert, Kady O'Malley and Dan Gardner along with Allan Gregg, Bob Rae and Nathan Cullen. Don Newman is the master of ceremonies, Sen. Hugh Segal moderates the debates and former auditor general Shelia Fraser is the time-keeper.
Hon. co-chair John Manley kicked off the event with a fine tribute to Jim Travers, a personal friend before Manley entered politics.
