Le Devoir turns 100
Montreal’s Le Devoir reached the century mark today.
CBC reported that the French-language daily was founded in 1910 under the promise, paraphrased, to “support honest people and denounce the villains.” As Metro Montreal noted, quoting founder Henri Bourassa, it also promised depth and intelligence: “Sans doute nous ne donnerons pas à nos lecteurs le genre de joyeusetés qu’on trouve à foison dans les journaux à grand tirage et à petites images.”
The key to its success is likely that it remains independently owned and operated. As publisher Bernard Descoteaux told CBC: “We are sheltered from certain influences … This independence gives us what I call ‘freedom to think.’ We are free to take positions.”
