Questions: people want to know…
- Is the CBC “trying to make itself more palatable to the majority Conservative government that may be coming our way?”
- Where, when it comes to Heather Mallick, are the defenders of free speech who supported Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant?
And opinions: so far more than 73 per cent of J-Source readers who voted said ‘No’ to our poll asking, “Do you think the CBC was right to retract Heather Mallick’s column?”
Some of Mallick’s dark thoughts in reaction to it all are here.
Globe and Mail columnist Russell Smith
wants to know “if the CBC is desperately trying to make itself more
palatable to the majority Conservative government that may be coming
our way in October – a government that is already suspicious and
hostile to the broadcaster, and that holds its life in its hands.”
Smith writes, of course, of the CBC decision to pull Heather Mallick’s
column on Sarah Palin.
Great question.
Another question is asked by letter-writer Naeem Siddiqi in the Globe and Mail Oct. 1st. Siddiqi says he’s a Canadian
Muslim who has been lectured about the “freedom to offend … that all
Muslim-bashers have a God-given right to,” and cites the freedom of
expression claimed by champions of Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant. He asks:
“How come the same people who were beating up Mr. Steyn and Mr.
Levant’s critics are now failing to come to Heather Mallick’s defence?”
Another great question.
By the way, so far more than 73 per cent of J-Source readers who voted said ‘No’ to our poll asking, “Do you think the CBC was right to retract Heather Mallick’s column?”
Mallick decision: populist pandering?

To letter writer Naeem
To letter writer Naeem Siddiqi:
Try substituting “Muslim” for “Palin” in Mallick’s column. He’s figure out pretty quick the difference between Mallick and Steyn and why no one should come to Mallick’s defence.
Populist pandering? No. The CBC got caught at its xenophobic best. It’s hate for all things middle American knows no bounds.

Obviously Muslim-bashing is
Obviously Muslim-bashing is acceptable to some due to racial hostilty, while Palin-bashing isn’t–especially from a writer of colour. There have been Obama-bashing campaigns in the US underscoring his Muslim past of long ago.
While attending a technical college in 2006, I left the class to make a phone call. When I returned, the teacher was saying, “Your white skins are your greatest assets.” He faltered on seeing me, but repeated the words as I took my chair.
A Toronto Sun-Leger Marketing poll revealed almost 50% of Canadians admitted being racist. Legislation outlawing racism may only have turned N. American society passive-aggressive.

CBC has a hate for all things
CBC has a hate for all things American? I listen to CBC radio a fair amount and watch CBC TV for news and I don’t see or hear what I would describe as an anti-American sentiment. Nor do sense a difference, editorially, between CBC and CTV relative to America and Americans. What am I missing?
