Memo: Anne Marie Owens announces leadership team at National Post
The Globe and Mail's focus editor Julie Traves is joining the Post as deputy editor and Ben Errett becomes director of strategy.
This memo from editor-in-chief Anne Marie Owens announces her leadership team at the National Post.
I’m thrilled to announce my new leadership team.
Please welcome Julie Traves as Deputy Editor. Julie joins the Post from the Globe and Mail, where she’s been for a decade—most recently as the editor of the Focus section, spearheading longform journalism on politics, social trends, science and ideas. She has worked in almost every section of the paper, and on paper-wide ebooks and large-scale multi-platform projects. Julie will oversee all aspects of the operation. She will bring her passion for storytelling, her keen eye for narrative and her editorial acumen to work with every section editor to help bolster the content through all sections of the Post—in paper and digitally. Julie’s dogged commitment to getting the very best out of people will help us navigate this next exciting chapter of the Post’s existence.
Benjamin Errett becomes Director of Strategy. Ben will work with reporters and editors to define new roles, help reorganize the newsroom to meet future challenges and harness analytics to guide us along the way. He will identify and develop great stories and revenue generators across all content sections and on all platforms. His role will by necessity involve a focus on digital, but extends across all aspects of the organization. Ben has long been an innovator at the Post, creating a fully integrated team, embracing the Postmedia Labs concept in his sections and consistently contributing to every aspect of the operation. He will not be bringing back the National Mitten Registry.
Together, Julie & Ben will help facilitate the newsroom reorganization required to develop and deliver a national, daily tablet in the near term, and more important, to be properly ready for the digital-first reality.
We will begin immediately to search for a replacement for Ben.
Julie & Ben will begin their new roles Sept. 22

Later, Owens sent another memo regarding Erin Valois.
I’m delighted to announce that Erin Valois will be joining us as executive producer, digital. Erin returns to the Post after a stint at theScore, a sports app with about five million active monthly users, where she helped manage a staff of more than 25 editors. She brings her experience at the helm of a major mobile brand, a strong foundation in device-based news consumption, and the solid leadership skills to work with reporters and editors during this time of transition at the Post. Erin will be an incredible asset for us as we figure out new directions for NP/FP in mobile.
Erin joins us Sept. 24
