PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Mount Royal University’s journalism program prepares students to be the next generation of digital storytellers, both inside and outside the country’s newsrooms. It is the oldest undergraduate journalism program in Western Canada, offering individualized instruction, hands-on, small-group learning, an inclusive culture and extensive coaching, story vetting and ethical review – all hallmarks of the best approaches to higher education. Students establish a professional foundation through communication theory and direct practice. They learn to structure information for different audiences and produce multimedia projects to a high standard, developing skills in research, interviewing, writing, editing, audio and video production, photography, digital design, and social media. The Calgary Journal, the program’s student-produced community news publication, is recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for excellence both online and in print. Students in every year of the program are involved in production, giving junior students a home for their work and senior students an opportunity to serve in editorial management roles. The Journal is also an important hub for engaging the diverse community it serve.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA:

The MRU Journalism Program takes in about 60 students each September. It receives 3 to 4 applications for every one accepted. Admissions are competitive with an average GPA range of 65% to 70%. Applicants must have a minimum grade of 60% in English Language Arts 30-1, and 50% in Social Studies 30-1.
