Union members voted 97 per cent in favour of authorizing their bargaining committee to call a strike, reported CBC. A four-year contract affecting 500 editorial, advertising and circulation workers expires June 30.

My first reaction is, “Are
My first reaction is, “Are they out of their minds?”
With newspapers all over the world going bankrupt and print media being pushed aside by a variety of electronic media, why would people risk their jobs in the country’s top newspaper, or indeed risk the country’s top newspaper, by deciding to strike? Not to mention the economy.

If they go through with it, it will come across as completely tone-deaf – out of touch with the average Canadian. Not the right way to build or maintain trust.

This is nothing more than a negotiating point in time. A strong response from the union to what appears to be unreasonable demands by the employer is expected. Admittedly we are in a new economic order so hopefully sound reasoning will prevail
