Alberni Valley News editor Susan Quinn has been awarded the Peter Gzowski Life Literacy Fellowship.

The fellowship, named after late broadcaster and journalist Peter Gzowski, provides a $3,000 grant for a Canadian journalist to undertake a project to enhance public understanding of a literacy issue.Quinn will write a series on adult literacy in the region of Port Alberni, B.C.

“In the eight years I have worked in the Alberni Valley I have seen the effect of government cuts to core funding on literacy programs,” Quinn in an article published in Alberni Valley News. “I have covered literacy in every newspaper I have worked in and understand its importance to the community.”
