The Canadian Journalism Foundation has opened applications for its Excellence in Journalism Award. The award will be given out in two categories: Large or national media and small or local media.

According to The CJF, the award "embraces ideals of democratic citizenship, rigorous professional practice, honesty, accuracy, independence, public accountability and initiative as well as artistry, clarity of style and high quality of presentation."

Past winners of the award in the large media include CBC Radio’s The Current (2012), Toronto Star (2011) and the Winnipeg Free Press (2009). In the small media category, the Vancouver Observer, CBC Manitoba and Metroland Durham region have taken the award home in the last three years, respectively.
