Sure, Janet Cooke, Jayson Blair and others may have embarrassed us all, but there are also fake reports dating back to America's Revolutionary War in 1776, and a New York Sun article in 1835 which reported, on page 2 no less, that a powerful telescope had spotted creatures on the moon. Circulation soared.
