Toronto storm knocks out power at CBC Toronto, Globe and Mail headquarters, Sun Media printing plant
A record-setting storm hit Toronto Monday, causing Sun Media's printing plant in Islington to lose power for "several hours." Production had to be moved off-site to other QMI facilities. CBC Toronto and the headquarters of The Globe and Mail also lost power for a period of time.
A record-setting storm hit Toronto Monday, causing Sun Media's printing plant in Islington to lose power for "several hours." Production had to be moved off-site to other QMI facilities. The Peterborough Examiner, Belleville Intelligencer and The Kingston Whig Standard were among the affected newspapers.
The Peterborough Examiner had its edition printed in Mirabel, near Montreal, Quebec and customers could expect up to a four-hour delay before receiving the paper. The Kingston Whig Standard responded by offering its e-edition for free today.
Monday's storm also knocked out power at CBC's Toronto Broadcasting Centre, where programming continued as the building was powered by a generator. Power was restored at the CBC building at around 7:37 p.m. eastern after being out since about 6:15 p.m. said Chuck Thompson, head of media relations for CBC Services. The entire As It Happens broadcast, the last 15 minutes of the local CBC Toronto newscast and a special segment of storm coverage were all produced using generator power, he said. The headquarters of The Globe and Mail also lost power for a period of time.
