After months of looking, Swerve has finally named a new editor. Valerie Berenyi started this week as the award-winning weekly magazine’s new chief.

Berenyi has been working as a journalist and editor for 28 years, most recently as a senior features writer in The Calgary Herald’s Real Life section – of which she was the founding editor.

"Magazines are my first love and I'm thrilled to be joining such a talented and dynamic crew," Berenyi told the Herald. "Swerve has become such an essential part of the city's cultural scene.”

Swerve received nine awards at this year’s Western Magazine Awards, as well as four gold awards, two silver awards and four honourable mentions at this year’s National Magazine Awards.

Berenyi is stepping into the role after Swerve’s creator, Shelley Youngblut, left the magazine to become a western editor for The Globe and Mail. Youngblut received a lifetime achievement award at the Western Magazine Awards in 2009 while at the helm of Swerve.
